Variants IV is part of a series using photographs of 19 water shut-off valve covers embedded in the asphalt of a street near my home. Though I was drawn their circular shape, I quickly began to notice the unique characteristics of each one as I photographed them.
As I tried to put into words the essence of my work, I discovered the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. In his book, Wabi-Sabi for artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, Leonard Koren describes an object that elicits wabi-sabi as having corrosion, and details that are overlooked, among other qualities. The wear and tear (corrosion) caused by road traffic, and the variety of letters and text imprinted on the steel (overlooked details), was the impetus for creating the Variants series.
