Divide & Subtract

I’m very proud of this piece! I began with 25 large, square pieces of photographic prints cut from 12” x 18” sheets. I cut each square into two rectangles (as in my last series, Full of Holes),  and quickly decided that another cut was necessary, resulting in 100 pieces! Thus, the word divide in the title. 

Although the colour pairings within each group of 4 provided interest, the composition felt heavy, overloaded. So I began removing some of the small squares. Subtraction. I felt the piece could now breathe. 

I enjoyed working with the geometry of the squares and rectangles, and have just found that there is a quilt pattern called Disappearing Nine Patch that is a variation of the basic Nine Patch. In quilting, the nine patch block is cross-cut into four sections (see below). By rotating some of the  sections, you come up with a very different looking block.
